In vivo and in vitro quantification of with spot lesions remineralization adjacent to orthodontic brackets

Abstract

Enamel demineralization is a significant risk associated with orthodontic treatment when oral hygiene is poor. Prevention of demineralization during orthodontic treatment is one of the greatest challenges faced by clinicians despite modern advances in caries prevention. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of two protocols used for white spot enamel lesion (WSL) remineralization. In the in vitro study, 30 extracted premolars teeth will compose the sample. Orthodontic brackets will be bonded on buccal surface and the teeth will remain in special solution for artificial white spot enamel lesion development. Teeth will be divided in three groups: G1: chlorhexidine gel 2% (n=10), G2: fluoride varnish - Duraphat (n=10) and G3: control group - artificial saliva (n=10). The treatment protocol will be applied twice, with one week interval. Quantification of remineralization process will be assessed by three fluorescence methods: Quantitative Light-Induced Fluorescence - QLF, DIAGNOdent pen and Vistaproof, after the last application, after 30 and 90 days. In the randomized controlled trial, the sample will be composed by 30 WSL in adolescents from 12-17 years old present in incisors, canines and premolars. The sample will be divided in three groups (n=10) (chohexidine gel 2% and fluoride varnish - Duraphat) and control group - oral hygiene (n=10). Quantification of remineralization process will be assessed by the DDpen with the same intervals of evaluation described in the vitro study. Sperman Correlation Coefficient will be used to evaluate validity and reproducibility of the methods; analysis of variance will be applied to compare the methods. (AU)
