Abstract
The aim of this study is to verify effect of the use of antioxidants as selenium and vitamin E added to the diet of lactating cows, on milk production and health. It will be performed an experiment with 24 cows in lactation, during 12 weeks at the Experimental Farm - APTA, Ribeirão Preto. The cows will receive the following treatments: control diet; control diet + vitamin E + selenium; diet with sunflower oil; sunflower oil diet + vitamin E + selenium. Blood will be collected from animals at the start and after 12 weeks. Milk yields of cows will be recorded weekly and the somatic cell count and bacterial will be analyzed in milk. In the samples of blood collected, it will be measured the glutathione peroxidase and functional activity of neutrophils. The supplemental vitamin E may help the immune system of the animal improving the health of the mammary gland and general health of the animal, and also increasing milk yield. (AU)
