Abstract
The diversity of biological activities found in spider secretions as venom and hemolymph have motivated several research groups to search for molecules with potential therapeutic use, which results in an increasing number of toxins isolated and sequenced over the years. But despite advances, the number of spider peptides isolated and characterized is estimated to be only 0.01% of all possible existing sequences. Recent studies have indicated the presence of components with antimicrobial activity in the venom of various Brazilian spiders. However, few of these components have been characterized. Considering the biological potential of molecules present in the venoms, the importance of characterizing these toxins and the importance of exploring new active molecules, we propose in this research project the fractionation of proteins and peptides present in the venom of Brazilian spiders, identification of biological activities and determination of their primary structures by mass spectrometry analysis and de novo sequencing.
