Abstract

The study of eating behavior associated with the question of obesity requires proposals for careful and inter-disciplinary investigations, considering the importance and complexity of the topic. The proposed research plan, based on the anthropology of health, can be seen as a continuation of research carried out in 2011 at the Endocrinology and Nutrition Center of the Hospital at the University of Barcelona, Spain, as a post-doctoral training program (CAPES/Carolina Foundation). A new stage of this study has the main objective of broadening knowledge about the psychological and cultural meanings of eating behavior as related to obesity. The research would specifically address the out-patient treatment dispensed in the city of Campinas, Brazil, as compared to the work carried out in Barcelona. This methodological proposal for qualitative research in health includes the participation of the researcher in the treatment context. She would have the task of drawing up daily fieldwork logs and conducting semi-directive interviews with patients in treatment for obesity and with health professionals involved in this same treatment. A better understanding of subjective factors regarding how patients and professionals interpret eating can contribute to better acceptance of treatment and the promotion of patients' autonomy in living with their obesity, which can be a determining factor for chronic diseases and metabolic disorders. The project has the possibility of contributing with the research activities at the Laboratory of Qualitative Clinical Research, and also has the potential of strengthening academic bonds of cooperation with the research group of the Graduate Program in Medical Anthropology of the Rovira i Virgili University, in Tarragona, Spain (AU)
