Abstract

The child development is a complex process that begins at conception and extends for a long period, involving various aspects such as physical growth, maturation, neurological, behavioral, cognitive, social and emotional. The infant development period is from conception to 6 years of age. Since the development of the child is completed from the combination of the biological characteristics and environmental interference, several problems may be caused from their development. Due to the importance and potential impact of delayed development on condition that future life, it is essential that we can, as early as possible, identify risks in order to minimize negative effects.However, to early identify risks, the Primary Care professionals need tools that can simply and objectively identify signs that recognize potential problems in the child development.Given the difficulties of assessment and screening of higher risk children, the Ministry of Health in 1984 proposed the Tracking Sheet Development which comprised of some milestones of child development, such as motor thick and thin, nervous system development and social, based on Denver II. In 2002, the Ministry of Health developed indicators for each age group of their psychic development; therefore it would be possible to observe signals that correspond to the children capabilities. The indicators are composed of 4 domains: ripening, Psychomotor, Social and Psychic. This technic is used in many health services in the country because it is simple and practical, but has not been validated yet. This study aims to validate this technic through cross-sectional study, which will be assessed 308 children in the area of the sub-district of Butantã, west of the city of São Paulo. This technic will be applied by trained researchers and to enable analysis of inter-observer reliability, the assessment of each child will be repeated within a maximum period of one week by another trained interviewer.It is expected from the results of this study to obtain a proposal which will help to early diagnose the risks of child developmental delay for referral to specialist services for diagnosis and treatment.
