Serious game m-Baby and e-Baby: contributions of emotional design for education in neonatal nursing

Abstract

Information technologies can provide a teaching-learning more flexible, attractive, interactive and collaborative. Hoping to contribute to building knowledge and technology to support education in neonatal nursing, which is a fundamental content for the training of nurses in perinatal health, some information technologies, that were considered appropriate for the content and functionality into their evaluation by experts and students, have already been developed, motivating to incorporate the emotional aspects of these technologies from affective experiences of students in user-product interaction. Thus, this project aims to improve the technology SSRNPT with the incorporation of emotional design through the development of serius game on basic human needs of oxygenation, circulation and skin integrity and make them available to computers and mobile devices connected to the Internet. Investigations have four stages: 1) For the development of the four serius game which together will constitute the e-Baby and m-Baby, we will use the methodological model User-Centered Design proposed by Preece, Rogers and Sharp (2002). 2) The validation of the interface of the serius game will be through methodological study, based on ergonomic criteria, in which students who have studied the courses that offer the content in neonatal nursing will be invited to participate. The data collection instruments (characterization and validation) will be online. The analysis of data on students' characterization and validation of interface will be presented by using descriptive statistics. The serius game would be considered appropriate considering ergonomic criteria if 70% of the evaluators assign the concepts very good and great for each item evaluated according to ISO 9241/10. 3) For the evaluation of emotion, it will be performed methodological study in which it will make a diagnosis on the emotional aspects incorporated into serius game. The impact of these on the emotions of the students is conducted concurrently with the validation interface, with the same population. The emotion assessment tool to be used in the study is the Premo. 4) To evaluate the impact of serius game e-Baby and m-Baby in the teaching-learning process of nursing students, a quasi-experimental research will be performed. To evaluate student learning through the use of serius game e-Baby and m-Baby, a pre-and post-tests, besides other assessments and control group (without the use of educational technologies), experimental group e (use of e-Baby) and experimental group m (use of m-Baby) will be performed. The groups will answer the questionnaire on the learning styles proposed by Alonso, Gallego and Honey (2002). Pretest on the first day of the course, intervention and post-test on the last day of the course will be performed. After performing the post-test, students in the experimental group e and in the experimental group m will perform a subjective assessment of serius game through a tool built based on the Likert scale. The student's grade in portfolio developed by him/her during the course, the grade of activity theoretical-practical in the neonatal unit setting and cognitive assessment in the end of the course will be also used as a performance measure. The control group will not have access to the serius game e-Baby and m-Baby, and will participate in the course taught conventionally. In analyzing the data, those relating to the characterization of students will be presented through the use of descriptive statistics for quantitative data and frequency tables for qualitative data. In comparing student performance among experimental group e, experimental group m and control group the nonparametric Mann-Whitney test will be used. The intra-group comparisons will be performed according nonparametric Wilcoxon test, since the groups are dependent. The study data will be tabulated and tested using the SPSS 18 and the level of significance for all analyzes will be 5%. (AU)
