Abstract

Monitoring the health profile of the population and measuring the magnitude of inequalities in health is essential in Brazil, which has one of the highest index of income concentration. Social determinants are known to modulate the health-illness profile of a population by delimiting standards of material living conditions, the adoption of health-related behavior and the organization of healthcare services. Periodic population-based health surveys allow evaluating tendencies in health-related events and the degree of prevailing social disparities. Such surveys also allow determining the impact of the public healthcare system with regard to reducing the effect of socioeconomic inequalities on health. The aim of this project is to investigate multiple dimensions of health through an analysis of social patterns, tendencies and disparities and develop an instrument with local/municipal application that can contribute to the creation of a coordinated health inquiry system in Brazil. This is the third population-based household inquiry in the city of Campinas, state of São Paulo, to be developed in 2013 (IsaCamp 2013). The proposed cross-sectional study also will allow the development of longitudinal studies as well as investigations with other designs. For such, two-stage cluster sampling will be employed. At least 1000 interviews will be held for each of the three age domains: adolescents, adults and elderly individuals. The questionnaire will address demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, health status, illnesses, health-related behavior, the use of healthcare services and preventive practices. (AU)
