Abstract

Zinc deficiency is one of the most important epidemiological nutritional deficiencies having great impact on public health throughout the world. Approximately one third of the world population lives in countries with high rates of zinc deficiency. Several methods can be used to assess the nutritional status of zinc, emphasizing the evaluation of mineral in plasma and erythrocytes. However, these evaluations did not detect the marginal state of zinc in individuals, which is probable due to a effective mineral homeostasis. Methodological advances in evaluation of molecular aspects constitute a new tool for investigating the nutritional status of zinc, by assessing the gene expression of carriers proteins and zinc-dependent proteins, especially metallothionein and transporters ZnT1 (SLC30A1 ) and ZIP4 (SLC39A4). The aim of this study is to assess the nutritional status of zinc in preschool children and its relation with the expression of genes encoding zinc transporter proteins. The study will be conducted with preschool aged children (3 to 6 years and 11meses) in full-time philanthropic daycare in the city of Aracaju/Sergipe. It will be evaluated biochemical, anthropometric and food intake. The nutritional status of zinc will be evaluated in erythrocytes and plasma and by metallothionein gene expression and zinc transport proteins. Specific tests will be performed for statistical analysis and correlation of data, adopting a significance level of 5%. (AU)
