Abstract

Forensic anthropology has as its main object of study and identify the identity of human subjects. Identity, in Latin identitate, is the "character set proper and exclusive to one person: name, age, profession, gender, physical defects, fingerprints". Sexual, ethnic group and age dimorphism can be established using two methods: morphologic and metric. Nowadays, the morphologic or qualitative method had been used in many investigations, but it has disadvantages because of its subjectivity. On the other hand, there´s a lack of scientific papers that include the quantification of these measures. This investigation has as objective to compare two quantitative methods (mandible´s stabilizer and 3D computerized tomography) that will allow to obtain the physical anthropological measurements becoming easily the identification of a person by the physical anthropologist. Innovative equipment will perform anthropometric measurements of 60 mandiblesfrom the Centro de Estudo e Pesquisas Forenses de Guarulhos. This equipment (Agência USP Inovação, processo USP 12.1.1036.23.1) will be tested as per its precision; in order to test its capacity of measurement, the jaw stabilizer will be submitted to a metrologic assessment using Werth ScopeCheck MB 800 3-D CNC, in the Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas (IPT), University of São Paulo (USP). Anthropometric analysis of the mandibles Will be performed using the mandible´s stabilizer. In order to test the validity of the measures, tomographs of the mandibles will also be performed using Werth TomoScope HV Compact, of the Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas (IPT), USP. With this investigation, we expect to standardize the measurements that are performed in mandibles, allowing them to be reproducible among the Brazilian Human Identification Services; gender, age and ethnic analysis with become more precise.
