Abstract

Candida albicans are commensal organisms that usually do not cause any apparent damage. However, this fungus becomes pathogenic microorganism under certain predispositions. This fungus is related to an inflammatory reaction of the palatal mucosa in users of denture, known as denture stomatitis. ALS1, ALS2, ALS3 and HWP1 fungal gene expression are related to fungal cell adhesion with host cells and heat-cured acrylic resin. If the oral tissues are constantly in contact with infected dentures, the use only local or systemic antifungal to eliminate of the pathogen may be ineffective. Thus it is necessary to search for alternative treatments that are directed to dentures and not only to mucosa. Treatments that produce fewer side effects and damage to the patient when compared with conventional methods, for example, the use of phytomedicines, are necessary. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the action of Equisetum giganteum phytomedicine against C. albicans and to discard your cytotoxic action on human palate as well as on human monocytes. For this, in vitro antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and nonstick action of specific phytomedicine fractions against C. albicans will be available. The in vitro tests will be the minimum inhibitory concentration, nitric oxide production by human monocyte, and fungal viability and ALS1, ALS2, ALS3 and HWP1 fungal gene expression in the biofilm formed on the heat-cured acrylic resin. In addition, in vitro fraction cytotoxic on human palatal epithelial and monocyte cells will be studied by colorimetric MTT assay. Expression of results and statistical tests are applied according to the presence or absence of normality in the evaluations (p <0.05). (AU)
