Abstract

The state of São Paulo has suffered dramatic environmental changes since 1850 that led to both a significant generation of richness and a consistent destruction of most of the original ecosystems. As a consequence there was a progressive quality loss of water and soil as well as a crescent contamination of wildlife by pesticides. However, there are no documented case of local extinction of wildlife and plants in São Paulo, what stresses possible adaption processes to anthropogenic environments. This also suggests that we should include agroecosystems in the context of conservation biology. This study aims to evaluate on a multidisciplinary way the socioeconomic and cultural processes that caused such changes in the land use in São Paulo during the 20th Century and also how such changes affected the ecosystems capacity to produce environmental services essential to the maintenance of life. In order to accomplish these goals a series of subprojects will be carried out into the areas of expertise of the multidisciplinary Graduate Program in Applied Ecology/USP - Piracicaba: ‘environment and society’, ‘conservation biology’, and ‘ecology of agroecosystems and environmental modeling’. In addition, an interdisciplinary subproject on the role of global changes on land use in agroecosystems of São Paulo will be carried out. (AU)
