Flavor mixing and CP violation

Abstract

This project aims to study the relations among (i) replication of gauge multiplets, (ii) flavor mixing and (iii) CP violation. In the Standard Model (SM) of elementary particles, the relational chain (i) -- (ii) -- (iii) is responsible for the appearance of CP violation, manifested through a complex phase in the mixing matrix (CKM) among the three families of quarks. The study of this chain in other contexts, the possibility of (iii) without (ii), (ii) without (iii), and the relation between the ingredients (i), (ii), (iii) and the spontaneous violation of symmetries may be very important to understand problems such as the origin of CP violation or family replication for quarks and leptons. From the model building point of view, there is a pressure to extend the SM to accommodate the asymmetry between matter and antimatter in the Universe through new sources of CP violation, the existence of dark matter, and the existence of mass and mixing among neutrinos, besides other theoretical problems of the SM. The last fact, i.e., the recent confirmation, for neutrinos, of tiny masses and mixing through large angles led to a rapid progress in neutrino physics that (a) impels the search for models that explain such features, as well as (b) motivates the search for deviations from the usual description and for subdominant effects.
