System development, plant density and electric conductivity evaluation in the aeroponic potato seed production

Abstract

The traditional methods of basic seed potato production currently used in Brazil, usually substrate, present as main disadvantage the low rate of tuber multiplication, which contributes greatly to raise the cost of production of seed potatoes. Thus, much of the basic potato seed is still imported. Besides the high cost and dependence on other countries, it runs the risk of introducing exotic plant pathogenic organisms in our territory. Recently, a major strategy to increase the rate of multiplication and production of high-health seed potatoes is the use of hydroponic systems, among which stands out the aeroponics, which can reach rates of tuber multiplication up to 5 times higher than in traditional systems in the substrate. However, the recent introduction of this system in Brazil happened only as prototype. In that way there is still need of improvement and adaptation for commercial scale cultivation, as well as new studies on cultural management and mineral nutrition of the crop in this system, aiming the dissemination and adoption by growers and companies specialized in potatoes seed production of the State of Sào Paulo and Brazil. Therefore, the objective of this project is to improve the aeroponic system for commercial scale production as well as to evaluate the influence of plant density (100, 66,44, 25 plants m-2) and electric conductivity (1.0, 2.0, 3.0 e 4.0 dS m-1) on seed potato minitubers yield, in two growing seasons, in the Northeast region of São Paulo.
