Abstract
In the scope of the extraordinary developments of information technology, the so-called Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have had their application more and more disseminated and diversified. Their technological identity regards their capacity to incorporate spatial dimension into analyses where it is the key element. However, their application in historical researches is still too incipient, not only regarding what happens in other fields of knowledge, but also in contrast with the systematic importance of issues related to space in studies of the past. As regards the Universidade Federal de São Paulo, along with the Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo, a group of researches has been after the study of the possibilities of using this technology in History.
