Abstract

Changes in nutritional status of populations in recent decades has been characterized by a reduction in the prevalence of malnutrition and an increasing prevalence of obesity among adults and children in developed and also in underdeveloped regions. Objective: To study the correlation among type of delivery, child characteristics at birth, socio demographic data and nutritional status of preschool children in public daycare centers. Methods: historical cohort based on records of children of an anthropometric database from a cross-sectional study ever conducted with preschoolers two to six years of age who were attending the day care centers in the city of Taubaté, from September 2008 to March 2010. The objective of this preliminary study was to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity in the population of preschool children of a sample of 17 daycare centers from the 59 existing in Taubaté. The daycares were probabilistically drafted sequentially until the batch completed 1103 children. All these children underwent anthropometric measurements of weight, height, arm circumference, skin folds and waist circumference. From the identification data of these children will be retrospectively collected information of birth weight and length, gestational age, type of birth, head circumference, Apgar score, number of prenatal visits, mother's weight at the beginning and at the end of pregnancy, age, level of education l, profession, marital and work status of the mother, number of people living in the household, number of children under 5, and ownership of the house. Based on an expected ratio of cesarean births of about 55% in Taubaté, we estimated to be necessary a total sample of at least 924 children, to include a minimum of 416 children born by normal delivery.
