Abstract
The AdS/CFT correspondence relates gravitational theories in curved backgrounds (usually of AdS type) with gauge theories living in a flat spacetime of lower dimentionality, living at the boundary of the curved background. It has been recently applied towards understanding strong coupling phenomena in condensed matter theory, and we propose to study aspects of both relativistic and nonrelativistic field theories in this context. M theory offers interesting puzzles with respect to the ABJM model, for instance in formulating the fuzzy description of M5-branes vs. D4-branes, or in formulating a Matrix theory description of the massive ABJM model. The description of relativistic plasmas from a dual black hole is difficult, and a shockwave scattering analysics can clarify the issues. Gluon and hadron scattering in AdS/CFT can be analyzed and provides information relevant for phenomenology. Obtaining correct and rigorous cosmologies from string theory is a difficult problem. Among these, embedding inflation and the chameleon mechanism in string theory are promising avenues. (AU)
