Abstract

Haemophilia is a hereditary blood-coagulation disorder that is characterized by sporadic bleeding manifestations that occur mostly in the form of hematomas and hemarthrosis, which represents one of the most typical manifestations of this disease. Hemarthrosis can produce chronic degenerative changes in the affected joint with deposition of iron from hemoglobin, causing the destruction of cartilage and bone of joints. Little is known about the involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in patients with hemophilia with rare cases reported in the literature. We propose to a clinical assessment the TMJs of severe hemophilic patients and use and MR imaging and apply relaxometry to quantify the abnormalities magnetic relaxation in T2-weighted images, small changes in cartilage and identification of iron tissue. This project will contribute for a better understanding of the action mechanisms of hemarthrosis, and can support in more specific therapeutic and appropriate treatment in hemophilic arthropathy.
