Clonal evaluation of Clostridium perfringens strains isolated from humans and animals by Multilocus sequence typing (MLST)

Abstract

Clostridium perfringens is considered a ubiquitous microorganism in the environment and in the vertebrate's intestinal tract, but this bacterium can cause severe diseases in human or animal. The goal of this study is to determine the toxinotyping and clonal similarity analysis of 40 strains of C. perfringens isolated from fecal samples of children and chickens with necrotizing enterocolitis by using the Multilocus Sequence Typing method (MLST). In this study we will use seven housekeeping genes: D-alanine D-alanine ligase (ddlA), superoxide dismutase (sod), deoxyuridine triphosphate (dut), glycerol kinase (glpK), deoxiguanilato kinase (gmK), and recombinase (recA), as well as the virulence gene plc for phospholipase C - alpha toxin. The results may provide microbiological, genetic and molecular data to better understand the epidemiology, virulence, and the clone distribution of this important anaerobic microorganism. (AU)
