Abstract

This study aims to validate a model to estimate the nursing workload required by trauma victims on Intensive Care Unit (ICU) discharge. This model was created in 2012 from the analysis of data from 200 trauma patients admitted to an ICU of the Hospital das Clínicas located in Sao Paulo. The model consisted of the following formula: NAS discharge = 37.171 + 0.188 (SAPS II death risk) + 0.193 (NISS), in which the NAS (Nursing Activities Score) expresses the nursing workload, the SAPS II (Simplified Acute Physiology Score) the severity of the patient, and the NISS (New Injury Severity Score) the severity of traumatic injuries. This prospective cohort study will be carried out in three hospitals considered reference centers for trauma care in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. The sample will consist of 180 trauma victims admitted to the ICU of these institutions. The dependent variable will be the nursing workload measured by NAS on the last day of the patient´s stay in the ICU. The independent variables, SAPS II and NISS, will be calculated on ICU admission. Multiple linear regression will be used to derive adjusted coefficients to specific populations in each institutions and the intraclass correlation coefficient will be applied to measure the reliability of the models. The results of the present investigation will provide information to nursing teams caring for the trauma victim after ICU discharge with data which will contribute to the quality of care and to the quantitative staff planning, as well as task distribution, aiming for excellence and safety in the trauma patient assistance.
