Abstract

When growing in biofilms microrganisms are more resistant to agents as antibiotics and disinfectants. Despite the great availability of antimicrobial compounds, there is a lack of molecules that are effective on controlling biofilms. Many biofilm-forming bacteria are related to diseases such as cystic fibrosis ( Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and tooth decay ( Streptococcus mutans) thus, the search for molecules that are effective on erradicate biofilms could represent an useful model to the development of new strategies to disease treatment. Natural and synthetic chalcones have potential anti-biofilm activity however, they have been little explored. The project aims to evaluate the potential of synthetic chalcones and derivatives flavanones and flavananols to control and erradicate biofilms of P. aeruginosa and S. mutans. (AU)
