Abstract

The proximity between microorganisms present in dental biofilm determines the existence of interaction between them, which can benefit the involved bacteria. This study aims to evaluate the interaction between Streptococcus mutans ATCC 35688 with two other cariogenic microorganisms: Actinomyces naeslundii ATCC 19039 e Streptococcus sobrinus ATCC 33478, in biofilms formed in vitro. First, biofilms growth will be standardized considering bacterial concentration (106, 107 and 108 UFC/ml) and growth period (24, 48 and 72 h). Biofilms will grow in triplicate on the surface of glass discs in BHI supplemented with 0.2% (v/v) sucrose, using a model of active attachment. The number of CFU/mL of each bacteria will be obtained with a strereomicroscope after plating in selective and/or differential culture media. Next, the metabolic activity (XTT test), the biochemical composition (biomass and production of proteins, carbohydrates and lactic acid) and the susceptibility to chlorhexidine immediately after the treatment or after re-growth for 24 h will be assessed. Data obtained will be statistically analysed using the software GraphPad Prism version 3.02 considering the significance level of 5%. (AU)
