Abstract

It is known fact that Chemistry is an area of small prestige among high school students who little understand the characteristics of this science, associating it with formulas and rules, the same happening with the population that associates this science to everything that is harmful to the environment. Actions in different areas have been taken to encourage the development of a more mature and positive view of science by the public. Museums and science centers appear as an important element to contribute to this question for awakening people's interest in science and technology and to contribute to science education. One hypothesis that can be explored to explain the low value in which the population has of chemistry is the lack of knowledge about what is produced by the scientists in this area of knowledge. If, in Brazil, much of the research in chemistry is carried out in universities, communication mechanisms of these institutions with the population can be a good strategy to motivate students to take an interest in this science. This project concerns the development of popular science lectures in Chemistry to study the contribution of these lectures to the motivation for learning chemistry with the combination of quantitative and qualitative strategies using the Self-Determination Theory as a theoretical framework.
