Abstract

Considering especially the lips, chronicle exposition to UV radiation does not trigger the same skin defense mechanisms, such as tanning and stratum corneum hypertrophy. Therefore, the use of sunscreen lip balms is extremely important. The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (University of São Paulo) Cosmetology Group has been developing promising researches and scientific partnerships related to bioactive photoprotection. The group experience demonstrated there is a real necessity in studying complex systems presenting bioactive photoprotection activity, especially the association of UV filters with active natural substances - isolated or in the form of extracts/butters - once non elucidated events occur in the mentioned systems, for example, the increasing or decreasing of Sun Protection Factor (SPF) in the presence of some natural compounds. The aim of this study is the development and physical-chemical and functional evaluation of sunscreen lip balms containing ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, titanium dioxide and shea butter (Butyrospermum parkii) as the bioactive compound. Specifically, the study purposes are: development of sunscreen lip balms by means of a factorial desing of experiment; physical and physical-chemical characteristics determination; functional properties evaluation by diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry with integrating sphere; and in vivo photoprotective efficacy, obtained by a globally recognized method. Additionally, the present study aims to promote the experimental refinement in Cosmetic Science research and scientific publication, in journals of high impact factor, considering the insertion area of this study and the photoprotection / bioactive photoprotection themes.
