Electrophysioological correlates of simbolic process in adults with typical development and children with communication disorder)

Abstract

This project aims to investigate electrophysiological correlates of symbolic processes, its components and precursors. The participants will be individuals with or without communication disorders of various etiologies, from both genders and different ages (starting from preschool age). The study will comprise electrophysiological technics of cognition analysis focusing the extraction of event-related potentials (ERPs). Experimental paradigms of symbolic relations establishment will be used in combination of ERPs' extraction technics. At first, it is proposed an integrated operation of conceptual and methodological tools within researchers on speech therapy, psychology and cognitive neuroscience in order to achieve mastery on the ERP extraction technology in this laboratory. Afterwards, it is expected that this interdisciplinarity may be useful not just to create a wider analysis of communication and human condition but also to improve the research of speech therapists, psychologists and neuroscientists on populations with different communication disorders. It is believed that this dialogue between fields may generate relevant contributions for the understanding of complex human behavior and also to yield knowledge capable of been applied on the development of useful technologies to individuals that suffers from communication disorders, as well as in the assessment of the efficacy of remedial therapeutic procedures.
