Abstract

The Noncommunicable Chronic Diseases (NCDs) are a major public health concern, accounting for 61% of all deaths worldwide in 2005. In Brazil, the NCDs were the leading cause of deaths in 2007, especially diseases of the circulatory system (29.4%) and neoplasms (15.4%). A small set of risk factors accounts for the vast majority of deaths from NCDs and substantial fraction of the burden of disease due to these diseases. These factors include smoking habit, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, dyslipidemia, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity. Since 2006, Vigitel System - Surveillance of Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases by Telephone Survey - was implemented in all the Brazilian State capitals and the in Federal District. This system evaluates annually estimates of the frequency and sociodemographic distribution of risk and protective factors for NCDs. In 2012, the Health Secretary of São Paulo State extended the Vigitel system coverage to the Interior of the State, obtaining estimates of the frequency and distribution of the major determinants of chronic diseases in the state adult population. The objective of this project is to continue the monitoring of the risk and protective factors for NCDs in the State of São Paulo, improving the actions of epidemiological surveillance. This project will provide to the State of São Paulo current and reliable estimates of the frequency and sociodemographic distribution of major risk and protective factors for chronic diseases, including indicators of tobacco consumption, alcohol consumption, diet and physical activity. Also, it will enable the evaluation of possible changes in the state epidemiological profile and the development of a state plan for tackling NCD, with specific data of local reality. (AU)
