Abstract

The coastal zone presents high biological diversity and environmental fragility, being influenced by both natural and anthropogenic processes. Water and atmospheric pollution, soil contamination, population pressure, among other impacts, are especially seen in this region. The changes promoted by the presence of pollutants in the aquatic environment may affect individuals from the molecular level to the morphophysiological or individual, to the higher levels of population and ecosystem. The fish are excellent biological models for monitoring the health of the aquatic ecosystem, given their wide diversity and ability to concentrate pollutants in their tissues directly from water and/or through dietary exposure. Thus, considering that the digestive system is one of the main ports of entry of pollutants in organisms, this study aims to evaluate the response of the digestive tract Morphophysiological puffer fish to environmental factors, through morphological techniques (light microscopy and electron transmission) and biochemical in order to support the understanding of the mechanisms of adaptation of the body to the harsh conditions of the marine environment. The animals will be collected in two distinct regions of the Litoral Paulista: Santos Estuarine System (highly impacted) and the Juréia-Itatins Ecological Station (a legally protected area). (AU)
