Effects of weight loss induced bariatric surgery in lung function and inflammatory profile of obese asthmatics

Abstract

The obese individual is more likely to develop asthma compared to normal weight, the exact mechanism for the development is still unclear and several hypotheses have been elaborated to this association, as the hypothesis related to the release of inflammatory mediators secreted by adipose tissue. The objective is to longitudinally assess the effects of weight loss on asthma in morbidly obese individuals undergoing bariatric surgery, with regard to pulmonary function, quality of life, symptoms, local and systemic inflammation in obese asthmatics before and after weight loss. Individuals who will undergo bariatric surgery and with clinical diagnosis of asthma will be included. Smokers and patients with cognitive limitations that interfere with the understanding of the procedures will be excluded. Volunteers will undergo an assessment at the time of entry into the group, shortly before bariatric surgery (after initial weight loss), 6 months after surgery, and 12 months after surgery. The evaluation consist of: anthropometric data, pulmonary function testing by spirometry with and without bronchodilator, dosage of systemic inflammatory markers by blood collection, dosage of local inflammatory markers by sputum collection, quality of life questionnaire by the AQLQ(S) and symptoms by questionnaire ACT. It is expected that the weight loss induced by bariatric surgery can improve symptoms, quality of life and inflammatory process associated with asthma in morbidly obese. (AU)
