Abstract

Recently, the use of natural dyes were suggested as adjuncts in the visualization of pre - retinal membranes and structures . Among them we can mention the anthocyanins , which are natural dyes found in grapes, blueberries , acai fruit and any other fruit with purple coloring . It is known that one of the anthocyanins is characteristic of its natural antioxidant effect.The extracted anthocyanins from acai fruit when adjusted to a concentration of 0.5 % , a pH of 7.06 and an osmolarity of 304mOsm resulted in a solution of purple coloring. When tested during chromovitrectomy in cadaveric eyes , the solution easily identified MLI revealed a purplish pigmentation. Therefore , there are recent studies that highlight the importance and viability of the clinical use of anthocyanins from the Acai berry ( Euterpe oleracea ) to stain effectively pre - retinal membranes and structures in vitreoretinal surgery in human cadaveric eyes. Patent of intraocular use of anthocyanins in acai fruit has been deposited as a national patent application P11000244 -8 under the A2 at the National Intellectual Property Institute ( INPI ) with assignment of rights to the Federal University of São Paulo .
