Abstract

The whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) are recognized as one of the most important pests of the century, mainly because they are begomoviruses vectors. These insects show high biological and intra-specific genetic variability and there are about 32 different species, divided into 11 groups. These species harbor a mandatory symbiotic bacteria called Portiera aleyrodidarum and several secondary symbionts: Arsenophonus, Hamiltonella, Wolbachia, Cardinium, Fritschea, Rickettsia and Orientia-like organism (OLO). The association found between species of whitefly and secondary symbionts suggests a possible contribution of these bacteria to confer characteristics such as insecticide resistance, host range, virus transmission and thermal tolerance. This work intends to identify the species of whitefly and endosymbionts, in addition to evaluating the potential for transmission of begomoviruses and criniviruses on ornamentals, establishing several colonies of whiteflies with different combinations of secondary symbionts, and from these, perform a study of transmission.
