Population structure evaluation of Gir cattle selected for meat and milk through SNPs arrays

Abstract

The Gyr herds over the years have been selected for the weight growth and milk production, allowing having two different populations. The breeding programs influence the structure of a population as a consequence of a prolonged and unequal genetic contribution of the main ancestors, which associated with the permanence of some bulls for long periods participating in breeding seasons. The genetic markers are used to detect variations between individuals in a specific segment of DNA. Currently, among the molecular markers, emphasis is being given to single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs), due to the high density of markers around in regions of interest and the possibility of automation of genotyping, assign a low error rate and lower cost. Genetic markers allow measuring the linkage disequilibrium (LD) between a pair of loci through the r2 value considered as LD descriptor and used to obtain the effective population size. Moreover, genetic markers may be used to distinguish populations by identifying sets of markers specific group and to detect recent positive selection of signatures. The aim of this study is to evaluate the genetic structure and genomics, including LD, effective size, and recent positive selection of signature, in two cattle populations Gyr, using high density SNP markers.
