Abstract

Anemia is the most commonly hematologic disorder in older adults, with a prevalence of approximately 10% in community-living elderly. It is usually associated with protein malnutrition and can have an impact on various aspects that affect the quality of life for older adults, such as frailty, impaired mobility, and functional impairment. Thus, aim of this project is to evaluate the impact of anemia and malnutrition on survival and the evolution of the functional state, in a five-year follow-up of older persons in Sao Paulo, Brazil. We are going to use data from SABE Study (Health, Welfare and Aging), which has probabilistic and representative sample of Sao Paulo population, where 1256 people aged 60 years and above were assessed in 2010, when the third follow-up visit of the cohort was carried out. Participants are going to be recruited and contacted again in 2015, and those who are located and agree to participate in this new wave will be reassessed. We are going to investigate the impact of nutritional status, including anthropometric measurements, and hemoglobin and albumin, on the worsening in functional status of the elderly, and also on the occurrence of death within five years. Logistic regression will be performed to evaluate the association of anemia and nutritional status and functional outcomes and survival analysis to assess mortality in the period. (AU)
