Abstract

In clinical and analytical toxicology, the availability of sophisticated analytical tools does not guarantee the quality of the result. The sample collection and processing represent a major challenge, since the errors that can occur during these steps possibly have great influence on the final analytical result. Dried blood spot (DBS) has enjoyed growing popularity as an alternative sampling procedure in the bioanalytical, clinical and pharmaceutical field, but few studies were dedicated to its use in forensic toxicology. DBS reproduce the composition of whole blood, but their sampling is much faster, less complex and less invasive. Furthermore, the DBS sample process does not require the use of anticoagulant or plasma separation and they can be stored for months at room temperature without any appreciable analyte loss. Lastly, the DBS process reduces the risk of infection by pathogens such as HIV or hepatitis, to a minimum. The aim of this project is to evaluate the stability of medicines, drug abuse and pesticides in DBS (prepared with post mortem blood), and compare the findings to the whole blood stability, stored at fridge. It will be studied 28 substances, most frequently identified at Forensic Toxicology Center (Legal Medical Institute of São Paulo), and also substances that, according to the literature, have low stability in blood and / or urine.
