Synthesis of new ag(i), Cu(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes based on sulfonamides and derivatives: antibacterial activities and application prospects on skin critically colonized wounds

Abstract

The discovery and the rational use of antimicrobial agents in the treatment of several infections brought a significant improvement in the life quality of patients. However, the indiscriminate use antimicrobial agents, including sulfonamides, has led to the appearance of multi-resistant bacterial strains, leading to the search for new drugs. One of the strategies to develop new antibacterial agents, especially for topical use, is to combine the existing drugs with metal ions having recognized antibacterial activity such as silver(I), copper(II) platinum(II) and palladium(II). Within this context, this project aims the synthesis, characterization and studies of the antibacterial activities of metal complexes of Ag(I), Cu(II), Pt(II) and Pd(II) with the sulfonamides sulfasalazine, sulfisoxazole and acetazolamide. The synthesized complexes will be characterized by a set of chemical and spectroscopic analysis, with emphasis on infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance of 1H, 13C and 15N, and high resolution mass spectrometry. The antibacterial activity of the compounds will be first evaluated by disc diffusion method (antibiogram). Subsequently the active compounds will be evaluated to determine their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). Finally, these complexes will be impregnated in biocompatible carriers, to evaluate the drug release capacity and the preparation of controlled release devices of new antibacterial agents for topical use.
