Evaluation of the preparation and accumulation of hard-tissue debris in long-oval root canals with TF Adaptive and Reciproc Systems using micro-computed tomography

Abstract

The action of the endodontic instrument on the canals walls produces hard-tissue debris. Their removal is mainly depending on the irrigation procedure. However, the action of the instrument can facilitate or not the accumulation of debris, especially in the light of its kinematics. The Reciproc system (VDW, Munich, Germany) works in a reciprocating motion, removing great quantity of dentin of the canals walls, but with more difficulty to remove debris out of the canal. The Twisted File (TF) system (SybronEndo, Orange, CA) combines the rotary and reciprocating motion with better hard-tissue debris removal (due to rotary kinematic) and efficacy in the preparation of the root canal. The aims of this study will be: evaluate the preparation and quantify the presence of hard-tissue debris in long-oval canals comparing the TF Adaptive and Reciproc systems using the micro-computed tomography (µCT); and correlate the presence of smear layer using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Forty lower molars will be selected and divided in two groups: G1 - TF Adaptive and G2 - Reciproc. Each specimen will be scanned three times: before and after instrumentation and after final passive ultrasonic irrigation. Morphometric changes will be measured by volume increases, remaining untreated canal surface area and quantification of hard-tissue debris after preparation. The roots will be clivated for SEM analyses of the smear layer. The results will be tabulated and subjected to statistic analysis. (AU)
