Abstract

Nanoscience and nanotechnology study the production, manipulation and applications of materials at the nanometric and atomic scale. The nanostructures have peculiar properties due to their size. Nanoparticles and other metallic nanostructures involve, at least in one dimension, tens to hundreds of tens of metal atoms which have very different characteristics in this arrangement in comparison with individual atoms or massive materials (bulk). The peculiar characteristics of these materials are: large surface energies, specific electronic structure (local density of states), plasmon excitation, quantum confinement, short-range ordering and others. The unique properties of nanoparticles and other metal nanostructures are observed in optical, electronic, magnetic and catalytic level and they can also serve as delivery systems of different compounds to cells and tissues. In this project we aim to study and develop different methods of synthesis and stabilization of nanoparticles and other metal nanostructures through green methods and one-step synthesis; characterize their properties and apply them in two principal areas of study: Biochemistry/Cell Biology and Energy. The biochemical and biological studies involve the use of cell culture and membrane mimetic systems such as the giant unilamellar vesicles as targets for photodynamic therapy models and/or protection against oxidative stress. For the biochemical and cell biology studies, the metallic nanostructures can be hybridized with magnetite, associated with lipids, polyethylene glycol, porphyrins, microperoxidase, and cytochrome c. Studies including application of energy involve cytochrome c and porphyrins association with semiconductor nanoparticles such as anatase, iron oxide and zinc oxide nanowires. Cytochrome c was shown to act as an acceptor of photoexcited anatase and hematite electrons; and in addition we intend to characterize better these systems extending the studies for the use of synthetic porphyrins.
