Abstract

The limbic system is affected by sensory stimuli, including stimulation from the auditory system. Not only, neurons and synapses from regions like the hippocampus and the amygdala can be affected by auditory stimulation and some pathologies of the auditory system caused by acoustic trauma, as for example tinnitus, have a strong limbic component. Recently we demonstrated that chronic high-intensity auditory stimulation inhibits long-term potentiation in the Schaffer-CA1 hippocampal pathway in rats, without affecting spatial learning and memory (Cunha et al., 2105). In this project we propose to investigate the mechanisms underlying this effect and the effect of the acute auditory stimulation, the effect on auditory synapses and the implementation of optogenetics tools which will help in the investigation of this and other related phenomena. Because of the increasing exposition to loud sounds in the modern urban life, both caused by environmental, occupational and recreational causes, and to the impact in the auditory and emotional health that the acoustic stress can promote, to understand the mechanisms that link the auditory and limbic system are important for the comprehension of the physiological substrates of the pathologies caused by acoustic stress.
