Abstract

This research proposal encompasses three major fields in hadron and particles physics:1. Meson and nucleon structure, i.e. the quark and gluon content and the wave functions of these hadrons and their excited states with a strong focus on the experimental program carried out at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in Virginia;2. Flavor physics, in particular nonperturbative effects in weak decays of D and B mesons and indirect tests of beyond Standard Model physics which are extensively studied by the LHCb collaboration at CERN;3. Quantum Chromodynamics under extreme conditions and the effect of temperature and density on the quark-mass functions, their impact on bound states, such as light and in particular charmed mesons, with an eye on the forthcoming experiments at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR at GSI) in Germany. All of the above research fields have a common thread: the crucial ingredients in the calculation of most observables are hadronic matrix elements, whether decay constants, form factors, distributions amplitudes or couplings, all of which are of nonperturbative nature.
