Abstract

Although yttrium tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) is a promising material, it lacks hydrothermal stability at low temperature due to the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation which can compromise its mechanical properties and hence its long-term predictability. This project aims to innovate in the synthesis of alumina-toughened-zirconia (ZTA) composites for dentistry that combines the best properties of both alumina and of zirconia yielding mechanical properties and hydrothermal stability to the oral environment. A method is proposed to synthesize ZTA composites with either a conventional zirconia powder or a translucent zirconia powder both to be compared with experimental translucent and conventional Y-TZP. Optical properties, phase transformation, and biaxial flexural strength will be characterized before and after an accelerated aging protocol. The benefits of this project include the fabrication of ZTA blocks for CAD/CAM that can be used as monolithic prostheses in minimally invasive preparations which preserve tooth structure and as a substructure for prostheses. This project is within the scope of what was originally proposed in JP FAPESP # 2012/19078-7 ("STEP-STRESS ACCELERATED LIFE TESTING AND FRACTOGRAPHY FOR RELIABILITY CHARACTERIZATION OF DENTAL IMPLANTS") that is aimed to nucleate at FOB a center for accelerated life testing and fractographic analysis to predict the reliability of implant-supported reconstructions and characterize their failure modes, thus enabling training and knowledge input in the field. This project comprises the synthesis and characterization of 2 ZTA composites and 2 experimental Y-TZP and subsequent testing would involve step-stress accelerated life testing and the methods described in Projeto Central and Projetos adjacentes (see Anexo 1_Projeto). From the first R1, this proposal includes several colaborating institutions that could benefit from the nucleated center both within and outside of SP. (AU)
