Evaluation of Ni and V species in crude oil

Abstract

The trace elements determination in crude oil and petrochemicals products (gasoline, fuel oil, etc.) has been the main focus of different papers published annually. Since these elements (such as As, Cu, Fe, Hg, Ni, Pb, S, Se, Co and V) affect the cracking and refining process of petroleum, as contamination of catalytic processes. Another factor is the constant risk of environmental pollution that occurs when the oil spill or improper disposal of heavy metals in industrial effluents, with consequent risks to flora and fauna, releasing potentially toxic chemical species to the environment. Although the total concentration of elemental be important to know the chemical composition of the oil, it does not reflect the amount of potentially toxic compounds that may be associated with different macromolecules which contribute to reductions in the refining process and contribute to increase the enviromental pollution. Therefore, in some cases, especially for studies related to the quality of fuels is necessary to know which chemical species present in these products. Thus, it becomes necessary to make the identification, determination and fractionation of trace elements in petroleum and derivatives using atomic absorption spectrometry, optical emission spectrometry with separation techniques, such as the liquid / liquid extraction, high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography.
