Abstract

Currently essential oils have gained great prominence in the world economy, not only for its medicinal properties, but also because of its wide use in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries, which the essential oils are used as flavoring agents, besides its utilization as raw material for flavoring industries. A possible oil quality loss may be associated to the terpenes compounds decomposition, when heated or exposed to air, producing off -flavors. Terpene partial removal, process known as deterpenation, can be performed using many different techniques. Among these various possibilities, the liquid-liquid extraction has shown successful results. In this context, the present project aims to conduct the experimental study and computer simulation of the essential oils deterpenation process in the perforated rotating discs column, using ethanol solutions with different water contents as solvent. The column will be operated continuously and in countercurrent under conditions of room temperature and pressure. In addition, the phase equilibrium of real systems composed of crude essential oil, ethanol and water will be studied at 25 °C. At this stage of the study, it is intended to use the lavandin (Lavandula hybrida) and bergamot (Citrus aurantium bergamia) crude essential oils. The equilibrium experimental data will be predicted using the NRTL and UNIQUAC parameters set previously adjusted during the development of the master's degree project (FAPESP n° 2008/07326-0).Thereby, through this research project, the technical viability of the essential oils fractionation process by liquid-liquid extraction and the use of the NRTL and UNIQUAC parameters to describe the equilibrium composition of real systems will be verified.
