Abstract

Summary. The importance of the Trypanosomatidae family relies not only on the human parasites responsible for debilitating and lethal endemic diseases in the Americas and Africa. The contemporary importance of the species of this family also rests on its richness of models for studies of evolution, cell development, biogeography and phylogeography of protists in general. The main goals of this project are: (1) to enlarge the number of cultures of the Trypanosomatid Culture Collection of the University of São Paulo (TCC-USP) currently housing ~2500 cultures in N2-liquid from a high diversity of vertebrates (fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including humans), and invertebrates (Diptera, Hemiptera and leeches); (2) the barcoding of the entire culture collection by sequencing the SSU rRNA and gGAPDH genes; (3) the extension of studies on the diversity, biogeography, phylogeny and taxonomy of the Trypanosomatidae initiated in our laboratory more than 20 years ago. For these purposes, ~ 500 trypanosomatid samples from different Brazilian biomes and other Neotropical and Afrotropical regions will be barcoded, and complete genomes of selected trypanosomatids determined for phylogenetic and evolutionary studies.Key words: Trypanosomatidae, parasites, insect, plant, DNA barcoding, phylogeny, taxonomy.
