Restructuring the internet network of the Agronomic Institute: improving the information technology environment

Abstract

The mission of the Agronomic Institute (IAC) is to generate and transfer science, technology and products in order to improve the crop production systems with environmental sustainability. This mission also comprises the socioeconomic development and the food security and it should be achieved by means of research projects, human resources training and patrimony preservation. Over the last years, it has been given special emphasis on transferring knowledge to the society. Under these efforts it may be highlighted the development of new agricultural techniques, new varieties (1039 cultivars, 98 species, 720 registered cultivars and 21 legally-protected- cultivars), diagnosis of plant diseases, soil analysis laboratorial programs, new propagating material of several crops (including fruit, grain, fibers and citrus) and the fact that more than 40000 works have been trained on pesticide application. In this view, it is worth mentioning that the constant maintenance and improvement of the institute's internet network is a fundamental step for transferring the knowledge generated by the IAC to the society. Today, 12 IAC's units situated in Campinas, Cordeirópolis, Jundiaí, Ribeirão Preto and Votuporanga have carried out 329 research projects (there are other agronomic experiments carried out in several regions of Brazil). Accordingly, considering the nature of an agronomical research institution in which the regional variability of soil and climate plays a fundamental role on crop yields, an internet network capable of enabling the free communication among the IAC's employees as well as between the IAC and the society is highly required. Therefore, it becomes evident the importance of a high-quality internet for the Agronomic Institute to keep the high quality of its services. On such background, the improvement of internet devices, such as optical fibers and swiches, and software updates must be frequently performed in order to (i) improve network security standards and (ii) to prevent the loss of data. The above-mentioned maintenance is essential to prevent any interruption of the research and other services carried ouy by the IAC. This project aims at improving the internet network of the Agronomic Institute. This project can be regards as the second step of the project (15083-4 supported by the FAPESP in 2015). (AU)
