Technical evaluation of the Instituto Agronômico information technology and actions to improve the speed and data storage capacity

Abstract

This project aims to hire the technical evaluation service of the Information Technology environment (IT), at Instituto Agronômico (IAC), to design and size the entire network that interconnects IAC headquarter and Experimental Center (CEC), both located in Campinas. This analysis will allow to identify with precision any operational and performance bottlenecks, IT faillure points and other issues, in order to size IAC Information Technology infrastructure in the short, medium and long term, to ensure greater safety, efficiency and speed the transmission and data receipt related to the available services to intranet and internet access on your main network, including avoiding network interruptions. Moreover, to make feasible the connection of IAC to the Redecomep, we intend to also hire service for installation and configuration of Linux server, already available at the institution, with access to the IAC scientific community belonging to 7 of the 12 CEC research centers. The Redecomep is an initiative of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT), coordinated by the National Network of Education and Research (RNP), to implement high-speed networks in the metropolitan areas served by the RNP points of presence. This network, interconnected by its own fiber optics, was deployed to link research and higher education institutions in the metropolitan region of Campinas, to ensure their self-sufficiency. In addition, it intends to acquire new Windows server to be a Web repository, in order to accommodate the agro-meteorological databases (Ciiagro/IAC), as well as the herbarium and chemical analysis databases of IAC, which are of great relevance to many users of the agricultural sector. As additional information about these databases, it should be mentioned that climate data is collected from more than 100 weather stations, covering virtually the entire state and constitutes one of the oldest data collection of Brazil, starting in 1890, without any interruption since then. Concerning to the herbarium, it has more than 51,666 cataloged plants available for consultation. The current server is at the limit of its capacity, the operating system and hardware are obsolete and they are no longer supported. Therefore, the acquisition of more modern equipment and with greater data storage capacity, will allow more efficient and safer management of these databases. (AU)
