Abstract

Biofilm formation on implant abutment is a persistent problem that can cause bone loss and implant failure. Once bacteria attached to surfaces and develop a complex structure with extracellular matrix production bacterial cells become highly resistant to antibiotics and host defenses. This process is affected by some factors, including: bacterial properties and material surface characteristics, such as chemical composition, surface energy, hydrophilicity, and topography. In an attempt to reduce the quantity and quality of bacteria adhered onto them, researchers have modified the physical-chemical properties of titanium implant abutment surfaces with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) due to their potent antibacterial activity. However, previous studies have reported that some Gram-positive bacteria species are less susceptible to AgNPs and, in addition, silver can be toxic to human cells depending on the concentration. Accordingly, to improve the antimicrobial properties and to reduce the amount of silver available, we have synthetized silver tungstate (±-Ag2WO4) and silver molibdate (²-Ag2MoO4) as micro crystals to coat titanium implant abutment surfaces. Our preliminaries experiments showed promising results in relation to antimicrobial activity, as well as to microcrystals cytotoxicity. As a technological advancement, we are using these materials to create a new type of implant abutments surfaces coating focusing in peri-implantitis treatment and/or prevention. To this end, we aim to evaluate, by means of different approaches, the antimicrobial effect of these coating materials on microorganisms adhesion and in monolayer and 3-D collagen matrices fibroblast cells culture.
