Abstract

B lymphocytes actively participate in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis, mainly in the progressive forms of the disease. Autoantibodies can cause tissue damage in the neurons contributing to neurodegeneration. B lymphocytes are specific antigen-presenting cells, since neuroantigen is recognized by BCR and processed antigen is presented to CD4 autoreactive T cells. Furthermore, B-lymphocytes produce pro-inflammatory cytokines thus amplifying the inflammatory response. Moreover, tertiary lymphoid niches, rich in B-cells were identified in the meninges of MS patients with secondary progressive form of the disease. In this study, we aim to study the response of subpopulations of B lymphocytes (cytotoxic and suppressor) of patients with primary progressive MS. (AU)
