Evaluation of WU and KI polyomavírus frequency in samples of differents populations attended in a tertiary hospital of São Paulo.

Abstract

Viral infections that affect the respiratory system are responsible for high rates of mortality and morbidity worldwide. It is estimated that an adult person may have one to three respiratory tract infections each year. IN 2007 two new polyomavirus been described, the first KIPyV ( Karolinska Institute), and the second named WUPyV (Washington University) . Studies have been conducted in different populations such as immunosuppressed patients and children, but several aspects have not been evaluated with respect to new polyomavirus, such as frequency in different populations, comproved association as etiologic agents of respiratory infections, and frequency in immunocompetent and imunocompromised patients adult patients. There are currently no descriptions of these viruses in Brazil. The present study aims to investigate through real-time PCR, the occurrence of polyomavirus WUPyV and KIPyV among samples of patients at risk and asymptomatic, collected for twelve years. Evaluation of polyomavirus WUPyV and KIPyV detection in different populations with different age groups, different degrees of immunosuppression, and different clinical presentations may determine the actual role of these viruses as etiological agents of respiratory infections.
