Abstract

Technological and industrial advances significantly affected the life and behavior of the population. Provided a better quality of life, especially the access to obtain the food, to increase the number of jobs, development of different types of transport, minimizing the distances between locations, which enabled the world economy. On the other hand, in recent times the society is facing several negative aspects, among them the high levels of air pollution. It is known that the presence of atmospheric pollutants may cause substantial modifications in morphology, physiology, biochemistry and plant growth. The variation of the concentration of secondary metabolites in plants can be related to the circadian rate, humidity, atmospheric air composition, the presence of pathogens and herbivores, altitude, ultraviolet and visible radiation, rainfall, temperature, age of the plant, nutrient availability and atmospheric pollution.Eugenia uniflora L., popularly known as "cherry" refers to a highly adapted to urban environments species and highly contaminated by airborne pollutants and studies show that individuals occurring in urban and rural centers respond differently to the effects of pollution in relation to their anatomical features, showing that this is a bioindicator species of the air quality. In this sense, a comparative study of the content of flavonoids in polar extracts and essential oils present in the leaves of E. uniflora specimens occurring in the metropolitan region of São Paulo and in rural areas of Mogi Cruzes-SP as well as the study of chemical composition in different seasons, associated with the heavy metal content in leaves, soil quality and the presence of environmental pollutants, can allow a better understanding of the contribution of each of these variables in the production of secondary metabolites.
