Abstract

The sugarcane vinasse produced by Brazilian biorefineries currently has been used for fertirrigation of the sugarcane field. This straightforward and inexpensive approach was reported to have negative environmental impact. Additionally, local communities are facing the problem of vinasse's strong unpleasant odor. Anaerobic digestion of vinasse can generate better environmental impact producing a surplus of bioenergy. However, this comes with unchanged odor and still relatively high nutrients concentrations in anaerobic digestion effluent. In this study, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii strain will be tested for growth in digested vinasse and potential use for bioethanol production. The objectives will be to determine optimal cultivation conditions and to analyze the algal biomass composition. (AU)
