Abstract

The aim of the project is to develop analytical methods with different sample preparation approaches for the determinations of rare earth elements (Ce, Dy, Eu, La, Nb, Pr, Sc, Sm, Y and Yb) with applications of environmental interest (waters, plants, soilsa dn sediments), agrochemistry (fertilizer) and geochemistry (mineal rocks), and noble metals (Au, Ag, Pd, Pt and Rh) in printed circuit boards, automotive catalysts and activated charcoal by ICP OES. The systematic approach should involve the following strategies: (i) To study parameters related to sample preparation (grinding and evaluation of the influence of particle size on digestion / extraction) and characterization by microfluorescence of X-rays (¼-FRX), scanning electron microscopy with electron dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). (ii) To develop procedures for digestion or extraction of elements using microwave oven and ultrasonic bath or probe. (iii) To develop methods for elements determinations in different matrices by ICP OES, aiming to find the best parameters of optimization of the instrument to avoid interference, seeking to share requirements such as selectivity, sensitivity and lower limits of detection. (iv) To develop methods for determinations of elements in water (drinking, river and sea) for direct analysis or separation and preconcentration by solid-liquid extraction using different extractive materials. At the end, it is intended to develop methods with high precision and accuracy and that can be applied for quality control and to support the sectors of interest in the research. (AU)
