Abstract

The main purpose of this project is to strengthen the collaboration and academic exchanges among the visiting professor, NEV-USP, and CEPESP/FGV with the goal of both developing research in São Paulo and elaborating international research projects. The project includes four types of activities by the visiting professor: 1. Organization of theoretical seminars; 2. Training of researchers in qualitative methodology; 3. Fieldwork for the project "New Urban Worlds"; 4. Elaboration of an article for publication in an international journal. The Project "New Urban Worlds" aims at investigating transformations in everyday life (especially household organization and gender patterns), in the dynamics of local politics (especially the demobilization of urban social movements, the dynamics of electoral politics and the role of cabos eleitorais), in the forms of sociability and cultural production (creation of new organizational forms based on collectives and cultural production), and in the dynamics of violence (increasingly shaped by organized crime) in areas of São Paulo's peripheries. The project argues that these transformations are creating new forms of collective life that replace the forms of collective life associated with auto construction and that generated the pattern of peripheral urbanization that was dominant until recently. This project to be developed in São Paulo is part of an international collaboration with researchers in South Africa, India, and Indonesia. (AU)
